spending time with God

As I shared in a recent vlog, I’ve been consistent with my daily 1-hour prayer with the Lord—you can check it out here. I shared that prayer doesn’t just consist of asking Him for things, but also worshipping Him, thanking Him, reading the Bible or devotional, or reading a spiritual book. What matters is spending time with the Lord, just being in His presence. That means you can sit in silence, focus on your breath, and try to feel the Holy Spirit moving in your body.
Here is a method you can use to sense the Spirit of God moving in you:
Start with being quiet
Make our hearts & minds present and available
Get rid of anything that’s in the way of being present and available to God
Release skepticism
Lay down timetables and expectations for certain outcomes
Turn your heart and your mind toward God, and allow Him to come
For each thought, ask yourself, is this the kind of thought God might originate—based on what we know about him from Scripture?
If a thought comes that doesn’t feel like the kind God might originate, recognize it, and then gently bring your focus back on Him
I’ve mentioned that prayer includes reading the Bible. Here is a good quote on why it’s important to read God’s Word (the Bible):
“You won’t know his heart, until you know his word.”
—Pastor Sam Fleury, sermon at Project Church Sacramento, 6/26/2022.
The more familiar we become with God, the more we begin to know what it feels like when we’re in His presence or acting on His will. Reading through the Bible is not a one time event, it’s something as Christians we’re called to do for the rest of our lives. When we’re in the Word, we’re spending time with God.
From a practical standpoint, start with what you can do right now. Start with dedicating at least 5-minutes a day with God. Then let that habit grow further as you become more comfortable and develop a routine. Maybe in a few months you can stretch to 15-minutes, then 30-minutes, etc. The important thing is to put aside a regular time each day to pray.
Prayer time with God is not only good for you, but it's good for God too. He wants us to praise, worship and spend time with Him. It's what He designed us to do.
