Step 7 – What does it mean to let God take control of our lives?

“When we put our life in God’s hands, he will reshape us as he sees fit. It is our humility that allows us to accept the fact that he is the Creator. Our new life may be similar to the one we left behind or entirely different. God is the master craftsman. Whatever he does, we can trust that he will recreate our life beautifully, once we get out of his way!”
Giving up Control devotional, from The Life Recovery Bible, p. 957.

I recently watched a YouTube video that asked the question, “What is God?” (You can view it here). The host didn’t get an answer that satisfied him, but he acknowledged the idea of a Creator is not beyond logic considering we as humans can formulate the idea of God.

For me, and many others, the God of the Bible is what leads us to a better life. When it comes down to it, it’s about aligning our thoughts and actions with the love of God. And it begins with faith to unlock our spirit connection with the Holy Spirit. When we start to sense the guiding of the Holy Spirit (it can come as an idea, an inkling, a nudging, a gut feeling, maybe even through others sharing thoughts that align with our own) and follow it we will eventually know what it means to live a God-filled life.

Even if you don’t believe there is a Creator or God of the universe, you can sense there is so much more to this life than what we can touch, see, or smell. It seems so limiting to me to think there is no greater force that guides us through life. If we tap into “the force” we’ll discover what our true nature is, which I believe is encompassed in love.

How is love our true nature? It begins with two things:

  1. First, believing there is a force greater than yourself that can guide and change you.

  2. Acting on what you believe the force is guiding you to do.

If you keep doing these two things consistently you will eventually find purpose in your life and start giving back to others the lessons you’ve learned (the circle of love at work). Someone will always need the insight and wisdom of those who have overcome their greatest weaknesses.

As recovering addicts, we inherently know that we require a strength beyond our understanding to guide us through our sober life. It’s not easy for anyone to live this life. At some point, each of us will come to a crossroads on what the meaning of life really is. And my hope and prayer is you’ll discover the God of love is the truth you’ve been seeking.
