Step 6 – the alchemy of God’s love

“It may be useful to consider love less as an aspect of relationship and more as an event of the soul. …The emphasis is on what love does to the soul. Does it bring broader vision? Does it initiate the soul in some way? Does it carry the lover away from earth to an awareness of divine things?”
Care of the Soul, by Thomas Moore, pp. 78-79.

I personally think Step 6 is crucial in sustaining our sobriety. No matter what it is we’re recovering from, we’ll all come to a point in which we ask ourselves what are we doing it for? Is it strictly for us? Is it for other people? Or are we recovering in line with a higher purpose? A higher being? A being Who Is Love?

In the same book quoted at the top of this blog, Thomas Moore often refers to alchemy. One definition of alchemy is “any magical power or process of transmuting a common substance, usually of little value, into a substance of great value.” In my mind, to be of great value you need love. Specifically, you need God’s Love.

When you combine God’s Love with your unique experience, your unique talents and gifts, you can’t help but be transformed, i.e. transmuted. You’re changed for the better. Truly, you’re elevated as a human being. When you bring the love of God into your heart, it affects the way you think, it affects how you speak to other people, and it definitely affects the choices you make. Something about God’s Love residing in your heart changes everything for the better. It can’t be explained in mere words, you have to experience it for yourself.
