“I define concentration as the ability to keep that awareness on one thing for a prolonged period of time.”

When it comes to sobriety the ultimate goal is what I term ‘sustained change’. In other words, you don’t want to go back to what you were. You want to continue to go forward to what you can become. And you don’t know what you will become unless you consistently stay focused on a goal. For us recovering addicts, the goal is to not use. That’s always the goal. We should be concentrating on our sobriety.
In the YouTube video referenced above, the speaker shares that what we concentrate on we getter better at. It’s an inevitable result of our focused effort and will. The more we focus on staying clean and sober the better we will become at it. The easier it becomes to walk away from our drug or habit of choice. The easier it is to learn ways to cope with life rather than escaping from it.
As a realist, I know some days, some moments will be easier to focus than others. But, regardless of how strong our focus is in any given moment we can still choose sobriety. We can leave a situation and come back to it until we’re mentally and emotionally ready to deal with it. We can choose other coping mechanisms rather than turn to the familiar ones, the ones we know will only bring us down. In other words, “Hang in there!”
