“Prayer is our power.”
—Credited to Pastor Loren Zamora, although I’m not sure of the origin.
One of the definitions of power is ‘to give power to’ or to ‘make powerful’. I often describe God as a source of energy. We tap into Him to guide and get us through life. Whether we believe it or not, acknowledge it or not, each of us is powered by some belief, some idea or philosophy that we’re living out in our lives. By allowing God to energize our thoughts, our words, and our actions, we’re essentially living out His Love in the world. That’s what it ultimately means to tap into God’s power.
The way we connect with God’s power is through prayer. But, let’s be clear that there are levels to prayer. I once shared at a recovery group how God didn’t want me to do a “toss-up prayer” where I’m walking out the door and praying, “God be with me today. Thank You, Jesus.” He wants my time. He wants me to rest in His presence. He wants a relationship with me like any other relationship I have; sit with Him, talk with Him, just hangout with Him.
Praying isn’t always asking God for things or for His intervention. Prayer can include one or more of the following elements:
Praise
Reading the Bible
Devotionals
Christian- or spiritually-based book
Worship
Meditation or quieting the mind and reflecting on God
Spirit writing or notetaking on Holy Spirit inspired thoughts/ideas
Prayer requests
Praying for other others (other than family and loved ones)
I’d venture to state that prayer can include anything we do that grows our relationship with God.
“In fact, the best prayer doesn’t even involve words at all; the best prayer is a life well-lived.”
Mark Batterson, author of The Circle Maker.
