be a change agent

change agent (agent of change)
A change agent, or agent of change, is someone who promotes and enables change to happen within any group or organization.
In business, a change agent is an individual who promotes and supports a new way of doing something within the company, whether it's the use of a new process, the adoption of a new management structure or the transformation of an old business model to a new one.

When you’re a person in recovery you’re inevitably an agent of change. You’ve admitted to yourself that you have a problem and have begun the process of healing, learning, and growing. If you consider your personal life like a “business” then you are promoting “a new way of doing something within the company.” In other words, you’re making different choices on how to cope with life.

Remember, most change is not easy. On some level, the majority of people are uncomfortable with change. According to one survey, “One in three people would avoid change if they could.” (https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/what-do-1-3-people-say-change-some-surprising-stats-jim-bright/) We like our routines, we’re comfortable in our habits. We just plain like to do things the way we like to do things.

And there’s the other side of our routines and habits that have led to our own personal success. We won’t change certain things about our life because we’ve succeeded while maintaining our routines and habits. In other words, we’ve convinced ourselves that we’re right about what we’re doing so why change anything? There’s truth in this question.

Although I consider myself an agent of change, I won’t change things for the sake of changing. I choose to change in order to grow, in order to improve, and because I know what I’ve been doing has not gotten the results I’m seeking. Change should only be implemented to become more efficient or to improve. Otherwise, it’s not necessary.

Each of us has to come to terms with what changes are required in our lives. No one else can really tell us what changes we require. We have to accept it for ourselves otherwise nothing will change.
